400 x 400 Design Challenge Call for entries

In 2020, Plymouth will be commemorating the 400-year anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower. As part of this celebration, the Plymouth Design Forum would like to invite local, regional, national and international design professionals, non-professionals and students to enter our 400 x 400 Design Challenge.

What is the 400 x 400 Design Challenge? Taking inspiration from the journey made by the crew and passengers of the Mayflower, and the global impact that their journey has subsequently had on the world, the brief is to create a design/artwork using the number ‘400’ and inspired by a monthly ‘theme’.

The ‘theme’ will be a specific word related to the Mayflower anniversary and will be released on the first day of the month, providing the inspiration for how ‘400’ should be interpreted for that month’s submissions. As an example, the ‘theme’ for the creation of designs/ artworks for ‘400’ in month #1 will be “Freedom”. The monthly themes will all be different and they will be released from 1st April 2019 all the way through to 1st July 2020, two months prior to the official anniversary.

This will provide 16 opportunities to enter and whilst we’d love people to enter every month, it’s totally up to you how many times you make a submission in one month or across the whole design challenge. The brief is completely open to anyone and there are no restrictions on content, style or the interpretation of ‘400’ within the context of the monthly theme. Entry is free and you can enter as many times as you want. The only fixed parameter on the brief, other than using ‘400’ and the monthly ‘theme’, is that each submission must measure 400 x 400mm (plus 3mm bleed, if appropriate).

Entry Categories There will be three categories for entry; professional, non-professional and student. Final Show It is our intention to find a way to exhibit all of the monthly shortlisted entries, on or around the official Mayflower 400 anniversary on 16th September 2020 (venue TBC).

This is subject to us finding a kind and benevolent sponsor to help us out with the cost of hiring a space and printing/displaying the entries… if anyone would like to help out with this (or if you know someone who could), please get in touch.
